Under the term speech therapy most people imagine preschoolers learning to articulate various sounds. However, the field of speech and language therapy has a much broader scope. People in all stages of life may seek speech and language services for different types of communication problems.

What does the field of speech and language therapy deal with?
Scientists agree that the most sensitive period for language and speech development is from 0 to 5 years of age, but research has confirmed that language abilities continue to develop into adulthood. The period from 0 - 5 years of age is the period of most remarkable and rapid language development when the child is optimally stimulated and development is not disrupted by any pathology.

Speech therapy is especially helpful for very young children who are harder to engage. Parents find it difficult to cope because their child shows less interest in interactions and shared play. If a child at the age of 24 months does not have a vocabulary of at least 50 concepts, does not connect words into two-word phrases, is reluctant to repeat words or imitate non-verbal gestures, it is appropriate to arrange a speech therapy appointment.
